Courteney Fox was MAST’s recipient of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), and she took up the week-long challenge in June.

With opportunities for personal development, RYLA includes sports, leadership development, and the chance to create networks and foster new friendships. “A highlight during the week was the connections with people that I’ve made and stepping outside of my comfort zone,” said Courteney.

The programme is about challenging oneself, and the prospect of public speaking was certainly daunting for Courteney. Additionally, she says, “Learning to navigate the world without a cell phone for seven days was very pleasant but also very strange.”

Reflecting on the experience, Courteney said, “I learned a lot about myself and the areas I need to improve to become a better leader. I discovered my strengths and also had the opportunity to meet some amazing speakers, including a presenter who worked for Steve Jobs and SpaceX – very inspiring for women in trades!”
